Express Entry

meeting

Express Entry has been established as Canada’s solution to support economic growth and development by attracting skilled foreign nationals to Canada. With economic uncertainty prevailing throughout the world Canada is becoming a destination of choice for skilled workers, professionals and trades persons.

Through Express Entry you may qualify for permanent residence through one of the following application options:

  • Federal Skilled Workers
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Provincial Nominee Programs

Express Entry applicants submit an online profile with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Applicants are ranked on a point system through Express Entry and must both qualify through Express Entry and one of the Express Entry programs (Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Workers or Federal Skilled Trades Program). If selected by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, applicants will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence. Express Entry applicants must maintain their profiles with ongoing up to date information.

Higher Ground Immigration Services assists with determining eligibility for Express Entry and its qualifying programs. We assist with the entire application process including managing your online Express Entry profile, preparing your permanent resident application and guiding you through the process from start to finish.

Federal Skilled Workers

In order to be eligible for permanent residence as a skilled worker or a professional a foreign national must meet certain criteria to qualify. Canada has a points based system for determining if a foreign national is eligible to apply. Points are accumulated based on an individuals education, experience, age, English or French language proficiency and adaptability. If a foreign national has accumulated enough points they are able to apply for permanent residence.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

Workers employed in a qualifying trade may be eligible for permanent residence if they have 2 years of experience in the past 5 years. If working in a regulated trade, workers must also obtain the necessary Canadian certificates and/or licences to operate in the trade. Applicants also need to demonstrate their language abilities by taking either a IELTS or CELPIP exam.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class is a valuable avenue for immigration for many temporary residents. Having experienced living and working in Canada, many temporary residents become qualified to apply for permanent resident status. This class of immigration is open to skilled temporary foreign workers who have gained a minimum of one year experience working in Canada in a skilled occupation.

This class is also open to foreign nationals who have graduated from an accredited Canadian post secondary school and have a minimum of one year experience in a skilled occupation.

International students taking part in the post-graduate work permit program may consider applying through this class if they wish to continue their residency in Canada on a permanent basis.

Provincial Nominee Programs

In an effort to allow provinces an opportunity to participate in attracting immigrants to their specific province the Canadian government allows provinces to nominate immigrants that meet certain criteria for permanent residence. A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a province’s solution for supporting economic growth and development within the province. PNPs adjust their eligibility criteria for provincial nomination for permanent residence regularly and may impact a foreign nationals options for permanent immigration to Canada.

Applying for permanent residence through a provincial nominee program is a two step process. Candidates for the PNP must first determine if they are eligible to apply for permanent residence through any of the available streams or categories identified by the province. Once a stream or category is identified the foreign national can apply for permanent residence. While a nomination is not a guarantee of permanent residence it is a significant step towards attaining permanent resident status.
